When exploring Marlborough (or any region), it makes a lot of sense to base
yourself at one
place for several days and do day trips to the different areas.
This has the advantage that you know where you will be sleeping each night and not having to spend a lot of time arranging accommodation at each new town. The bulk of your luggage can be left in your "rooms" and you aren't constantly packing and unpacking. Are great months to take a holiday break in Picton. The weather is stable and the days are sunny and warm Picton , gateway to Marlborough and the South Island, is an ideal place to base yourself while visiting the region. It is located at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound, part of the Marlborough Sounds. This small "waterfront" town centers around it's "port" which provides the terminal for the interisland ferries linking Picton to New Zealand's capital, Wellington, (the ferries effectively tie the two islands together). The port also provides facilities for fish and mussel farms and the export of logs from the region. During the summer Picton is a favorite stopover for many cruise ships.
It is a picturesque little town with a tourist atmosphere offering a relaxed
setting with a beautifully laid out waterfront, award-winning restaurants and
an outstanding climate.
The protected waters of the Marlborough Sounds are a boaties paradise with
people coming from far and wide to fish or play on the water.
Few visitors depart the quiet waterfront village of Picton without a lasting
impression of the town and its people.
You can play mini golf on the course on the waterfront, hire a motor scooter and tour the surrounding countryside, or just laze on the grass at the waterfront and watch the world go by. By car, bicycle, scooter or on foot, the town's your base while you take trips further afield . . . Let the local visitor information centre help you, or local tour operators be your hosts through countryside rich in history and interest. One day or half day fishing trips, visit a salmon farm while watching out for dolphins, seals and the sometime whale. Wreck diving, wind surfing and water skiing, or bush walks by the sea. Travel by boat to the Queen Charlotte Track or enjoy one of the many short walks in and around Picton. Then, further afield perhaps a tour of Marlborough's vinyards or some of Marlborough's craft centers. The town has range of choices when it's meal or drinks time. Stop and have a break in Picton.
